Our Top Album of the Year: The Artist's Lux Claims the Top Spot.

At first glance, this work could seem more like a difficult scholarly quiz rather than the latest pop project by a musician whose previous hit was a collaboration with an international K-pop icon. Split across four different movements and voiced in thirteen languages, this is a dizzying classical-tinged work that delves into feminine mystique, spiritual transcendence, and physical transformation, often via the prism of various women saints. The end of a relationship—a topic handled with grounded openness on another major 2025 album—is launched upwards here, carried by the lush sound of a major orchestra and input from a Pulitzer-winning composer among a vast roll call of contributors. The pure audacity alone renders the work of contemporary artists appear rather modest.

Rising Above Academic Pretense

The fact that this album succeeds in transcend dry academic chin-stroking feels nothing short of miraculous, with full credit belonging to the artist. While it's not the first time album to alchemize historical sounds and modern styles, the stakes are much greater here, and the balancing act more precarious. The element that really elevates her fourth album, outside of its multilayered tunes, dense arrangements, and inherent theatricality, proves to be a core spirit of fun. Much like the legendary artist during her peak, there is a captivating quality to Rosalía's voice that pulls you into its tornado. When she is tearing your heart apart, you nevertheless desire to stay right there through the journey.

A Prime Example of Joy

This playful energy comes forth clearly on the stirring Italian ballad inspired by a saint. It bathes in a sorrowful melancholy over several moments. Suddenly, all the music falls silent, to reveal we hear a gleeful laugh and a declaration before a comically exaggerated orchestral crescendo thuds down like cartoonish force. The song then segues into the wild track driven by galloping orchestration, an imposing choral group, and a surprise role from the artist herself.

"The magic with Lux is that you rarely quite understand—nor want to predict—what it will go next."

Almost every track ends in a totally distinct point than how it began. A track explores the transient trappings of fame over a delicate orchestration only to disintegrating into digital chaos. Another, a cut echoing the artist's previous rhythmic style starts out moody and brooding, with prowling beats, until sudden flamenco handclaps and a heavenly choir enter to smooth its rough corners.

The Bridge Between Art & Pop

A key achievement of the album is navigating the line of radical innovation and mainstream accessibility. It is no coincidence that the album has become the artist's first release to crack the upper reaches of major markets: at its core a suite of utterly undeniable pop songs. A song performed entirely in the English language swells on a refrain that feels to collect more and more infectious hooks while it spins upward. This feat is repeated by another powerful track that grows and constricts, weaving layered melodies as an intricate weave.

  • A waltz-like song charms via its playful, theatrical drama and an anthemic hook.
  • In its words, it aligns the pop culture impact of contemporary breakup anthems, lambasting an ex- partner labeled an "psychological bully".
  • Throughout the album, the vocals have a sharp smile, akin to a fairy-tale character concealing a knife: "Gold medal in acting like a motherfucker / You have the podium of letdown."

An Opulent Banquet for the Ears

This album represents pop on a maximalist scale, a hungry reach for capital-A Art in an era of impending artificial blankness. It eschews solipsism for glorious transcendence, crafting an over-the-top spectacle that skillfully controls its own inherent ridiculousness. It is a deep well of buried treasure that requires patience to completely explore but doesn't seem like hard work. Where some big pop albums of 2025 felt like feasting on scraps, Lux is a lavish feast at which the characters at it, some tipsy on holy drink, flit between discussions about historical saints, the profound sensation of heartbreaking grief, and shared stories about hopeless men. In essence, it's a modern-day musical from music's truly restlessly inventive practitioner.
