The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.
The one-time leader was convicted of orchestrating a government overthrow in September and sentenced more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he was staying under house arrest pending appeals.
High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after "new facts" were revealed.
This encompassed seeking to disable his tracking device and a call for a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a potential flight.
Court Filing Details Escape Concerns
In a filing authorising the custody, Justice Moraes said information from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his flight.
This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his offspring.
His offspring, his son Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a meeting of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.
His son wrote on online platforms on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your couch? I call on you to struggle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the possibility of the former president's "relocation to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a history of arranging to ask for protection through a consular facility", a announcement said.
The court filing underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is located around 13km from his dwelling.
Worldwide Consequences
His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative United States President President Trump, leading him to implement a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.
The former president is being held in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will have a custody hearing on the following day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with tracking devices.
They also requested that he be allowed to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he required ongoing care for lung conditions and other illnesses.
Background on Conviction
He was convicted of orchestrating a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the national vote to his ideological adversary, Lula.
High Court judges said that he knew of a plan which included plans to assassinate Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing his judicial proceedings.
The plot was prevented because it didn't receive the support of the armed forces officials. Lula was sworn in without issue on 1 January 2023.
But a week later, on the eighth of January, many Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged government buildings in the capital, Brasília.
The police stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.
The judges found that the demonstrators had been incited by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.
At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also prohibited from running for public office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the next presidential race.
