Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority lowered interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction this year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of employment gains created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are rising, although slowly. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
