EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
