An Kindness of Strangers: The Way a Person I Barely Knew Supported Me Land the Position That Altered My Path

During the final years of the 1980s, I set out on a low-cost journey to the European continent with a travel partner. Because my travel mate was considering starting a postgraduate program in NYC, we had booked a fortnight visit there before heading to London.

We got to the student accommodation, a big multi-story edifice on the Upper West Side named International House. Once we unpacked, we went directly to the canteen, where we grabbed food, found a table, and started talking to people eating there.

Beside me was an individual of Iraqi origin pursuing an engineering degree at an Ivy League institution. He inquired what I did for a living, and I explained that I had newly finished with a science degree and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He mentioned that there was an electron microscope unit at the institution – close to the school of engineering, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He proposed that I ought to seek a position with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, telling him that I was soon departing to Europe and, more critically, I didn’t have a US visa.

A day later I went out exploring, going back to the cafeteria that night. The engineering student approached me and let me know that he had arranged an interview for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Because he had gone to the trouble, I went to the meeting – but immediately told my interviewer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was probably wasting her time.

In typical New York fashion – a place where everything seems achievable – she declared: “We'll handle it. When can you start?” I missed my plane to London.

I was employed there for 36 months. A perk of the job was that I also received complimentary education at Columbia, and I took advantage to finish a master’s of international affairs.

I never saw that student again and I don’t even know his full name, but his remarkable generosity transformed my future in multiple respects. I would never have had the confidence or nerve to approach someone at an prestigious college and seek a position. Additionally, I had consistently hoped to pursue education overseas, but could never have afforded it without that tuition waiver.

Perhaps most importantly, that gig at Columbia led me to a position in Switzerland where I encountered my wonderful partner, with whom I currently share four wonderful sons and daughters. This was a pivotal life event. That benevolent individual changed my trajectory in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
